Cozy Summer Activities for When You Need a Softer Season
Summer has a reputation for being busy. But it's supposed to be chill! What happened?!
Calendars fill up. Vacations get planned. The kids are home. Weekends disappear into cookouts, sports tournaments, road trips, and endless to-do lists. Before we know it, we're exhausted by a season that was supposed to feel relaxing.
At Craft'n Pages, we're making a gentle case for something different this summer: a cozy summer.
Not a productive summer. Not a picture-perfect summer. Not a summer where every minute is optimized.
A cozy summer is about collecting small moments that help you slow down, reconnect with yourself, and find a little joy in ordinary days.
Here are a few of our favorite cozy summer activities to sprinkle into your season.
Create a Reading Nest
Summer reading doesn't have to happen poolside on a tropical vacation. A cozy reading moment can be as simple as a comfortable chair, a cold drink, a soft blanket (yes, even in summer—we're blanket people), and twenty uninterrupted minutes with a good book.
Try reading:
-
On a porch during a rainstorm
-
Under a tree in your backyard
-
At a local coffee shop
-
In a hammock
-
At a park you've never visited before
Bonus points if you bring a snack and leave your phone in another room.
Start a Tiny Nature Collection
We're not suggesting you become a full-time naturalist.
But there is something wonderfully grounding about paying attention to the small things around you.
Collect:
-
Pretty leaves
-
Interesting rocks
-
Seashells
-
Pressed flowers
-
Feathers (where legal and safe to collect)
-
Photos of birds, insects, or sunsets
Keep them in a jar, a notebook, or simply in your camera roll as a reminder to notice the world around you.
Make Something With Your Hands
One of our favorite forms of self-care is creating without worrying about whether the final product is "good."
Try:
-
Coloring
-
Watercolor painting
-
Embroidery
-
Diamond painting
-
Making friendship bracelets
-
DIY suncatchers
-
Pressed flower art
-
Collaging from old magazines
The goal isn't perfection. The goal is presence.
Have a Personal Picnic
Who says picnics require a group?
Pack a simple lunch, a favorite drink, a book, and a blanket. Head to a local park and give yourself permission to spend an hour doing absolutely nothing productive.
Sometimes a change of scenery is all it takes to reset your brain.
Create a Summer Soundtrack
One of our favorite parts of curating Craft'n Pages boxes is building playlists inspired by books.
This summer, create a playlist just for yourself.
Fill it with:
-
Songs that remind you of childhood summers
-
Music that makes you feel calm
-
Road trip favorites
-
Songs you've forgotten you loved
Then listen while reading, crafting, gardening, or watching the sunset.
Watch the Sky
This might be the simplest activity on the list.
Spend ten minutes watching:
-
A sunrise
-
A sunset
-
Passing clouds
-
A summer thunderstorm
-
Fireflies appearing at dusk
-
The stars on a clear night
We spend so much of our lives looking at screens. Looking at the sky feels like a tiny rebellion.
Write Letters You'll Never Send
Grab a notebook and write:
-
A letter to your younger self
-
A letter to a future version of yourself
-
A thank-you note to someone who changed your life
-
A letter to a place you miss
You don't have to mail them. Sometimes the act of writing is enough.
Visit Somewhere Close
Choose a place within thirty minutes of home that you've never visited.
Maybe it's:
-
A bookstore
-
A garden
-
A hiking trail
-
A small-town main street
-
A museum
-
A local coffee shop
Adventure doesn't always require a plane ticket.
Build a Cozy Summer Basket
Gather a few things that make slowing down easier:
-
A current read
-
A journal
-
Colored pencils
-
A water bottle
-
Sunscreen
-
A favorite snack
-
Headphones
-
A cozy cardigan for over-air-conditioned spaces
Keep it by the door so a cozy moment is always within reach.
Give Yourself Permission to Do Less
This might be the coziest summer activity of all.
Leave a few weekends unscheduled.
Say no to a few things.
Read the book. Take the nap. Sit on the porch. Watch the birds. Make the craft. Listen to the playlist.
Summer doesn't have to be packed to be memorable.
Sometimes the moments we remember most are the quiet ones—the chapter we couldn't put down, the craft project that made us lose track of time, the sunset that stopped us in our tracks, or the hour we spent doing absolutely nothing except being present.
And honestly? That's the kind of summer we're hoping to have.
What cozy summer activity are you adding to your list this year? We'd love to hear what's bringing you a little extra joy, wonder, and calm this season.Â
