Chasing Sunshine: Our New Favorite DIY Suncatcher Craft

Sometimes the best crafts aren't the most complicated ones.

They're the ones you find yourself reaching for again and again during little pockets of free time. The ones that don't require a dedicated craft room, hours of uninterrupted focus, or a Pinterest-perfect vision before you begin.

Over the past few weeks, we've been quietly falling in love with DIY suncatchers.

What started as a simple project quickly turned into one of those crafts we keep coming back to whenever we have a few spare moments. Add a bead here. A charm there. Rearrange a few crystals. Tie another strand.

Before long, you've created something completely unique—and completely your own.

Why We Love Them

Perhaps our favorite thing about these suncatchers is how customizable they are.

We've been gathering all sorts of supplies and mixing and matching them to fit whatever mood we're in:

  • Fishing line or lightweight thread
  • Chains in different sizes and finishes
  • Crystal drops
  • Glass gems
  • Beads
  • Charms
  • Sunbursts
  • Moons and stars
  • Florals
  • Vintage-inspired pieces
  • Colorful accents

Some of ours are long and dramatic. Some are simple and delicate. Some sparkle with every color imaginable while others lean into a more neutral, cozy aesthetic.

There really isn't a wrong way to make one.

Beginner-Friendly in the Best Possible Way

We know that trying a new craft can sometimes feel intimidating.

This isn't one of those crafts.

You don't need special skills.

You don't need artistic talent.

You don't need fancy tools.

You don't even need a lot of uninterrupted time.

One of the reasons we've enjoyed these so much is because they're incredibly easy to start and stop. You can work on one for five minutes while waiting for dinner to finish cooking or spend an hour happily creating while listening to an audiobook.

The pace is entirely up to you.

A Craft for Every Age

Another thing we love?

These work for just about everyone.

Kids can create colorful, whimsical versions filled with bright beads and charms. Teens can create trendy, aesthetic pieces for their bedrooms. Adults can lean into whatever style makes them happy—from boho and eclectic to minimalist and elegant.

And because every suncatcher turns out differently, they're also wonderful to make alongside friends or family.

No two are ever exactly alike.

The Unexpected Magic

Wendy has been hanging some of her finished suncatchers from a hanging plant in her cozy work-and-reading room while deciding where their permanent home might be.

The funny thing?

They may have already found it.

As sunlight pours through the nearby window, the crystals catch the light and scatter tiny rainbows throughout the room. The effect is subtle, magical, and surprisingly calming.

It's the kind of detail that makes you pause for a moment.

The kind of detail that reminds you to look up from your to-do list.

The kind of detail that turns an ordinary afternoon into something a little more special.

They Make Thoughtful Gifts, Too

If you're looking for a handmade gift idea, suncatchers are a wonderful option.

They're personal without being overly complicated.

They're beautiful without being expensive.

And every time sunlight catches them, the recipient gets a little reminder that someone took the time to create something just for them.

A Little Sunshine Goes a Long Way

At Craft'n Pages, we're always looking for creative projects that encourage us to slow down, step away from our screens, and make something with our hands.

These DIY suncatchers check every box.

They're affordable.

They're beginner-friendly.

They're easy to pick up and put down.

They're endlessly customizable.

And perhaps most importantly, they're rooted in something we can all use a little more of: sunshine.

We'll be sharing some of our favorite supplies, links, and finished creations below, and we'd love to see what you create if you decide to make your own.

Here's to finding joy in small moments, chasing a little sunshine, and filling our spaces with things that make us smile.
