Book Review: Twisty & Tense "It Should Have Been You"

You know that moment when you hit “send” and your stomach drops before the message even lands?

That’s the spark at the center of "It Should Have Been You"— and Andrea Mara turns it into a fast-paced, suburban nightmare you can’t look away from.

This is one of those thrillers that feels too possible: tidy streets, group chats, friendly waves… and the quiet realization that everyone is carrying something sharp under the surface. One mistake snowballs. Rumors move faster than truth. And consequences show up loud.

It Should Have Been You by Andrea Mara

Book at a glance

  • Title: It Should Have Been You

  • Genre: Suspense / thriller

  • Length: 384 pages

  • U.S. publication date: January 13, 2026

What it’s about

The setup is deliciously stressful: a woman intends to send a snarky message about a neighbor privately… but accidentally shares it to the entire neighborhood WhatsApp group instead. From there, the story spirals—fast—into fallout, fear, and escalating stakes.

Andrea Mara tells the story through multiple perspectives, which makes the tension feel like it’s tightening from every direction at once.

What we loved

  • The “oh no” premise that feels painfully modern (we’ve all feared an accidental send… just not like this)

  • Short chapters + quick momentum that make it dangerously easy to say “one more”

  • Neighborhood dynamics — the gossip, the alliances, the assumptions, the quiet cruelties

  • A cautionary edge about digital life and how fast things can turn

This is suspense that’s bingeable, but it also leaves you thinking—about reputations, impulsive choices, and how quickly a community can become a courtroom.

Why it was a March box contender

Behind the scenes: this book was genuinely in the running to be one of our March book spotlights.

It checked a lot of “Craft’n Pages pairing” boxes for us:

  • A compulsively readable plot (great for a weekend “I’m ignoring my responsibilities” read)

  • Big emotions: tension, dread, that can’t look away energy

  • A theme we love exploring: how small moments and small choices can ripple outward

In the end, we went a different direction for March because we locked in a theme + craft pairing we couldn’t resist—and we wanted the book to match that particular feeling more closely.

But this one? Still a strong recommendation if you want a smart, modern thriller that keeps your heart rate slightly disrespectful.

Should you read it?

If you like…

  • thrillers set in “perfect” neighborhoods with messy secrets

  • multiple POV suspense

  • social media / group chat consequences

  • fast pacing that feels like a runaway cart

…this belongs on your TBR.
